11 Undulators for the Projects PETRA III and FLASH
PETRA III: DESY, Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron, Hamburg
FLASH: University of Hamburg
Project duration: 2008
With PETRA III, DESY in Hamburg, Germany, built a new synchrotron light source of highest brilliance in 2009. In addition, that same year the existing FLASH accelerator (Free-Electron Laser in Hamburg) at DESY was upgraded by inserting so-called undulators for generating synchrotron radiation.
Babcock Noell received the order from DESY and the University of Hamburg to manufacture and deliver eleven undulator units, each 2m long. The high mechanical precision required for these devices was a particular challenge.
