SCU DEMO Undulator

SCU DEMO is a novel, superconducting NbTi undulator which is to be tested and inserted in the ANKA storage ring.
At a value of 10 µm in a 1.5 m long coil, the demands as to the mechanical tolerances are very high. All the relevant parts need to be manufactured in such an exact way that the electron beam does not experience phase errors of less than 3.5° passing through the undulator. To achieve this, an additional shimming concept has specifically been developed and tested.
The SCU DEMO is a magnet system cooled by means of four cryocoolers; the use of liquid gases such as helium and nitrogen becomes unnecessary. The cooling system is sized to 4 W.n. beam heat load.
