The containment vessel contains all of the nuclear equipment and components used in a nuclear power plant. In most cases, it is a spherical shell made of high-strength steel and has numerous gas-tight ports and penetrations. It represents the inner containment of state-of-the-art power plants.
During plant operation, a slight negative pressure inside the containment prevents radioactive substances from leaking into the environment. The containment vessel is designed to withstand excess pressure loads and elevated temperatures in case of incidents.
